Following the successful installation into Theatre 5 at Craigavon Area Hospital in 2009, Zest Audio were recently commissioned to again provide the audio solution for Craigavon Area Hospital's latest state-of-the-art Trauma & Orthopaedic Theatres. Again these theatres have been hailed as some of the most technologically advanced hospital theatres in the UK – and they’ve both got a music system to match thanks to the expertise of the Lisburn based audio specialist. The new Trauma and Orthopaedic Theatres at Craigavon Area Hospital are based on the same innovative principles as the previous Theatre 5 and so feature an innovative, tailor made music solution. It’s widely recognized that background music can help surgeons cope with the pressures of the operating table and the new music system from Zest Audio is just what the doctors ordered! “The two new theatres both have a one-piece, waterproof control panel which the surgeon uses to control lights, room temperature, oxygen levels and other functions,” said David Honeyford, director of Zest Audio. “We have added switching to enable this panel to also control the music systems we installed in the surgeons’ prep room. This gives the surgeon a touch control in the theatre from his panel, which then controls the selected iPod / CD music he’s listening to. “This is another installation we are very proud to be associated with. Yet again we’ve provided a custom solution that isn’t simply off-the-shelf. We have designed and accomplished a solution that meets exactly with the surgeons requirements. “Being able to interact with the waterproof surgeons touch-panel is a key component to the installation, as is providing the solution to meet the required IP56 rating. “The surgeon can now listen and control their music as they work, and the sound is acoustically coherent around the operating table for maximum pleasure.” Agreeing with the prognosis that music is relaxing, specialist registrar in surgery at Craigavon Hospital Dr Damian McKay said that like many in his profession, he found listening to background music soothing. “On arrival in the theatre it can also help some patients to relax at a time when they are stressed or anxious,” he added.
